I took my kids to the Indoor Go Kart and Laser Tag place for one of our final summer fun days. I've never done either (except of course for the Grand Prix track at Disney; but they have a "guide" in the middle of the lane, so you can't really falter). Our heat was up and my youngest leans over and says, "Mom, not to remind you about getting old, but this will be good training for my brother to get his driver's license." (OMG! Really? his brother is 10, mind you!) We gear up - head sock, helmet, foam collar for the boys - and our engines are started. ZOOOOOOM.... these little carts go a heckuva lot faster than I thought they would. Up to 30 mph and they are off, screeching around corners, running into the occasional tire-covered pylon... ZOOOM!!

I lap them (a couple of times) and as I watch the sheer joy on their faces (when I can catch a glimpse of them), I realize they don't know how to use their brakes! Is there a life lesson there, or what?!? At what age do we learn to use (the proverbial) brakes? To slow down and see what's in front of us? To take time to reflect before - ZOOOOOOM?!?

And, in case you're wondering, Laser Tag was a fun challenge! I had to threaten my oldest with grounding if he didn't let me escape and stop shooting me. My youngest, the Halo king, wiped us all out and, of course, had the highest score.

That Look and a Lesson in Letting Go

I'm constantly amazed by the places my kids decide to put their foot down. You know, when they choose "that" moment to exercise their independence and prove to the world that they don't need you anymore? I'm supportive of most of their efforts. It's tough as a parent to watch them move forward without you. And even tougher to resist running up behind them when they stumble (metaphorically speaking, of course). We're at the stage now that if I make a suggestion on how to accomplish a task, my son will do the opposite and I get this "look." You know the one. The one that says "I'm doing this just to prove you wrong," or, as it often happens, to prove me right, much to his chagrin. When the stakes are low, I let it all slide. After all, who will it really hurt if he wears his clothes inside out and backwards? Or, as in the layout below, he wants to eat his ice cream IN the pool? Sometimes you just have to let it go.

Sniffled - One More Thing Off My To Do List

I returned from my vacation to an overflowing inbox of "real" emails, advertisements, spam... you name it. As daunting as the loads of laundry, I set in determined to reduce the number of mails in my inbox. After trolling through, deleting, etc., I clicked on "oldest" and found a note to myself from 2007. I had jotted a quick email for a funny thing my youngest said. This, of course, being the focused person I am, drove me to look through (digitally) pics from 2007 so that I could scrapbook the "moment" and, thus, be able to delete one more email. I found one from the right time period and scrapped a page. It was fun. No, the laundry is not done. No, the email inbox is still stuffed (thank goodness Gmail offers lots of space; says I'm only 28% full!). BUT, I was able to delete the note and mark something off from my to do list from very long ago! Consider the day a success! :)

This month's quote challenge at Polka Dot Plum (that's a challenge to make a layout using a particular quote) really got me thinking.

I wrote a brief note to my boys; I'm sure some day they'll go "oh yeah, this is what my mom meant!"

Funny thing about parents... we don’t take you to museums, parks and other “extra curricular” activities just to keep you occupied (although it's definitely a part of it!). I’m sure some do it out of wanting to enrich their children’s education, or feel obliged to offer them opportunities to explore and offer a variety of new situations.

I know that I do it for a little bit of each of those reasons.

My real reason is it keeps ME young.

When I get the chance to interact with you on your level, it makes me marvel all over again about science, art, nature and appreciate more the wonders of how you are growing up and taking in this big world. It keeps me young when I get to laugh with you over the funny things and act silly with you whenever the opportunity presents itself. It goes to prove that...

While we try to teach our children all about life,

Our children teach us what Life is All About. -unknown

The guys are in front of a painted aquarium wall pretending to be under water. I don't suggest these things, by the way. They are so used to me pointing the camera, they yell - "Mom, take this shot" or "Mom, look, I'm being eaten by this giant (insert name of whatever mural or billboard we are near)." I love their spontaneity. That, too, keeps me young!

Collage with Kids... A lesson in Pokes and Sticky Fingers

I love collage! I consider myself a mixed-media artist and having the right adhesive is as important to me as having shelter, food and clothes. To keep me active in art, I teach art camps at KVPAC . ( A great place for kids to explore their creativity through art and theater. ) This week I taught 14 kids ages 5-8 the art of Collage and Assemblage.

I LOVE teaching kids. I taught adults for many years and grown-ups want to copy my sample to a "t." Wheres' the fun in that? Kids could care less what mine looks like. Show them the "how" and they deliver some really creative stuff! I always find it interesting at the differences in the kids. Some are tactile challenged and can't stand to touch paper mache glue. On the other end of the scale are the kids that just want to run their hands through the tub of beads or shells because "they like how it feels." There are the kids that dream up flying monsters that breathe oatmeal and the ones that, when drawing their house, want each brick to be exact.

This week, I was reminded about the drawbacks of teaching the 5-8 year olds - they don't know how to communicate without poking you in the arm or tugging on your shirt! At one point, I was helping one child and I had 2 on my right and 2 on my left poking me in the arm and tugging on my shirt. I heard the one that said "I have paint on my hands" first. Then "can I wash my hands" from another. Sure enough, I looked down and had paint smears on one side and globs of glue on the other. If only I had planned fabric art collage for the week's curriculum! :)

The project we completed as a class was this Creative Community Collage. We used the discarded foam board from the class next door (they used the circle cut outs) and collaged on 8x8 squares to place behind the openings. Most of the kids made at least one "hole." They all had a say in what went where!

Kids are amazing and being around them in these classes inspires me! I'll be back to doing my own collages again.... as soon as I finish peeling glue off my hands!

I decided to "reset" and start the New Year over. It was such an eventful first couple of weeks, it seemed like the right thing to do! It's working out really well so far. New projects are lining up and things are falling into place.

Easing Into the New Year

Easing into the New Year... Digi Scrapped today for the first time in I don't know how long. I'm excited to make this part of my routine again! Last year I enjoyed snapping a photo a day for Project 365. I still need to finish my layouts back through mid-October, but the shots are there. I like looking back at last year's chronicle, but feel that committing to a shot a day is too much this year. So I'm going to do one layout each week with some shots from the week - or it may end up being only one shot. No pressure here!

Other Goals met this week -
- my car is parked inside the garage. Yes, really, it is IN the garage! I've been a homeowner for, well, let's say a long time and have never actually used the garage to house my car! It's kinda cool, but I'm having to learn to back out my curved driveway now!

- Completed more illustrations for a book I'm working on. Sneak peeks next month!

- Took my first ride in an ambulance. Nick broke his leg in a freak accident bouncing on the trampoline. Poor guy is a trooper, but it's been hard to convince him his leg will heal and he won't be restricted to the couch his whole life.

New products coming soon to my shop at Digiscrapaganza and some freebies, too!

I hope your year is off to a good start. I can't say that breaking a leg is a great way to start the year, but, it could have been worse and we're all together. That's what matters!

I don't know about you, but 2010 qualifies for the "long, strange trip" award. So many "life changing" events happened this past year, culminating in a "sweeps worthy" 4th Quarter... it's good to be in January!

A perfect way to start the year - a crisp, cold, beautiful day with that happy, upbeat feeling you get when the skies are so blue you can see forever!

New Break out of the Box Challenge! at Digiscrapaganza!

Here are the basics - Each month I will present you with a new challenge.

This challenge will run from the 15th of the current month to the 14th of the next month. So, for instance, even if you complete the challenge in March, you won't be awarded the Digiscrapaganza bonus point until April, when the challenge closes. Complete challenge rules are HERE.

Be sure to post your layouts in our Challenge Gallery HERE and then come back here with the link to your layout.

This challenge will earn you 1/2 point for completing it. If you use at least 75% Digiscrapaganza product, you will earn an additional ONE point, for a total of 1 1/2 points possible for completing the challenge.

On the 14th, I will post a poll of all the entries and let you vote on your favorite layout. The winner will receive an additional 1/2 point AND get to sport a special blinkie!

So let's get down to business...
Since this is the first Break out of the Box challenge - that's what you have to do! Break out of the box!

I am providing you a box -

Click on the photo to go to the download link - or you can use any box of your choosing!

Anything you use INSIDE the box, you must also use OUTSIDE the box AND vice versa! Place the box anywhere you want on your page ---- use any background paper you want - just remember, if you've used it on the outside of the box, it MUST ALSO BE INSIDE in some way!!!

Up and ready to ROCK and ROLL in the Digiscrapaganza Forums!

Wow another month has gone by already and with that being said here is your March Theme Challenge.

This month I would love to see layouts done that have photos with musical instruments in them. It can be from playing Rock Band to School Concerts, just be sure that someone in the photo is playing an instrument.

We are starting a new way for you to earn points for free stuff in our store here at Digiscrapaganza. Before you had to use at least 75% of Digiscrapaganza products to earn any points.

Now you will be able to use products from other stores and earn 1/2 a point.

But if you use 75% of products from Digiscrapaganza you will earn another 1/2 a point for a total of 1 point.

"Time for a new scraplift. For the month of March I picked this lovely layout by Elaine ... aka emst. It is titled Peacock and Iguana. I love the deep dark green and how her photos stand out from it. I, also, love the way she did the border strip of paper from the same background paper. It gives the layout such a professional look. Her lovely clustering and the mask she used on the one photo just set it all off to perfection.

I hope you enjoy scraplifting this pretty layout as much as I did.

The Car Goes Where The Eyes Go

I just finished reading The Art of Racing in the Rain. When I started the book, I was crying by the end of the first chapter. I set it down and wasn't sure I would return...

I did. Mostly because I hate leaving things undone and having a story untold. I've only ever walked out of a movie once (Fritz the Cat) and walked away from a book (Stephen King's Pet Cemetary -and that was the last King I read for a looooooooooong time (Sorry, Stevie)). So I had to find out if there was more to this story told from the point of view of Enzo, the dog.

The story is a delight. Full of LIFE, pain, LOVE, wonderful insights and gems of wisdom - as could only be conceived and told by a dog, DEATH, injustice, failure, success and JOY.

I really enjoyed this book. And, not since Water for Elephants, have I felt compelled to recommend a book! Grab a tissue (or two) and settle in for a wonderful romp. You don't have to be a dog lover or a race car lover... just be open to enjoying a good book like you would a good Saturday matinee!

And, yes, I cried at the end, too!
